Education technologies
Hi There, Nice to meet you on my page J
A bit about me: My name is Ahmed Hamdi Abdel Monem Al-Sorouge. I am married to Yosra and have our roots in Egypt, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. We have three wonderful kids (two boys, and one girl) who are fond of breeding cats. I am a Senior Network Engineer at Dubai Women’s College (Plus I do part time teaching in IT for PM Students). I graduated in 1997 as an Electronics/Communication Engineer (Benha University-Egypt). I worked as an electromechanical engineer for eight years in different fields (Oil, Machines, and Industrial X-Ray); I was responsible for the training to new fellows/customers most of the time. In 2005, I changed my career to IT field where I started my steps to get recognized certificates such as ITIL®, Project Management PMP®, and Cisco CCSP®/CCDP®/CCNP®.
Education Technologies: I am using two different educational learning systems, first one is BbVista which can be considered as the HCT official LMS (learning Management System), and the second one is MyITLab which is provided by Pearson org. I have a positive experience with both systems (especially the BbVista).
I totally agreed with the article regarding the importance and advantages the education technology have added to our learning mechanism like collaboration, fully utilization of time to learn, Depth of understanding (by providing multimedia links/format/simulations for the Curricula), and meta-cognition which I would add it as advantage to LMS if student can use it as a source to get knowledge and to test themselves “did they really understood, did they misunderstand something, did they had a wrong preconception about some topics, and ….”
Finally, I do not have any concerns regarding LMS "unless the internet is down J
I'm glad to hear that you like using BbVista which I also tend to. I feel that if an eductaional institution has decided to use a certain LMS students should have the experience of using it in different subjects and teachers should be provided with the training and support to properly use it.

Hi Ahmed
ReplyDeleteThanks for your post. I agree with you that there are a wealth of resources for students to use to test their understanding - but my question is "How do we get them to do this? How can we get them to use that vast store of human knowledge to supplement what we do in class - many seem to want avoid even class if they can and seem to think that there is an unwritten agreement that says -if you come to classes, then you will get a good grade - no work required on your part! So how do we move them along to become curious and independent? I am not disagreeing with you - I am looking for ideas!
Best
Mark
Hi Mark,
DeleteThis is true; I think there are many ways to do that, first is through the social context which could help our students to be more enthusiasm about using technology in learning and daily life routine (this is a big challenge, but we are on right road of doing it through vast numbers of communities we have today), Second would be blended learning with technology which a kind of enforcement/encouraging to use technology, third would be learning environment which should be a 21st century learning environment (and not the factory model that we have in most of today’s learning environment), fourth is through students’ engagements in high tech activities (through assignments/work placements/social activities/campaigns/….).
I believe that as a human nature; we do things because we have to do it; we do things because we like/enjoy doing it. Same concept applies to our students.
Also I believe that as a human nature; we start to do things that we do not like to do but later on we may like it (human resistance of any new thing).
Best Regards,
Ahmed
I'm using WileyPlus for one of my courses, and I believe it should be somewhat similar to Pearson's MyLabs. For me, the challenge is getting the students to actually read the online textbook (which are written in an English level probably much higher that they're used to) instead of having them rely on my PowerPoint presentations.
DeleteTwo things I can think of are: 1) require students to create vocabulary lists from the text; 2) give quizzes where they'd have to look up the answers in the text.

ReplyDeleteI am using the MyManagmentLab and MyMarketingLab as well. They are very good resources for students but their level of language should be reconsidered specially that they are for year 1 students.
